Community Development

The Department of Community Development is a multi-faceted office with a variety of diverse programs. Originally formed to provide planning, zoning and building safety functions consistent with State law. The Department also  provides floodplain management information, 911 rural addressing and geographic information system (GIS) mapping.

 

The primary purpose of the Department is land use planning. Any time someone wants to change the use of their property in the unincorporated area or build something on their land, they should check with us to see if permits are required. We process over 500 building permits and 130 mobile or manufactured home placement permits each year and our certified building inspectors conduct several thousand inspections annually. Additionally, the staff schedules and conducts over 60 public hearings with various boards, commissions and neighborhood groups throughout the year to consider re-zoning's, Special Uses, Subdivisions, Comprehensive Plan amendments, variance applications and other code amendments.

Due to the functions of the Department, there is considerable staff contact with the public, our customers. For that reason, Department staff prides itself on being service-oriented. We don’t say "I don’t know," we say "I'll find out!"  Our overriding goal is quite simply to help the public access our services.  We invite the public to visit us, learn about our work and ask about our services.
